Happy Independence Day!
It’s a holiday for me and I come out in the balcony with a cup of coffee to sip. It’s cloudy, and, wow! wonderful colors have been rendered to the capital’s sky by these ‘kites’!
Of course, it’s Independence Day and not Freedom Day. We never got Freedom.
If you look close enough, “Independence is like the flight of a kite; Freedom is like the flight of a bird” Self propelled and with a free will.
60 years after the Independence, in an interview yesterday, I was asked a question – Gandhi and the Gandhian way ‘got’ us independence, right or wrong? I give you time to figure out this one word answer for yourself, while I narrate mine. The last word in the entire english dictionary which the interviewers wished to listen, was indeed my answer – Wrong.
Wrong, because had it been Bhagat Singh’s way we would have ‘taken’ freedom and not ‘got’ independence. And its repercussions, as predicted by Bhagat Singh, are evident to this date. No doubt we are independent, but independent of whom – the British Raj and what about the Political ‘Gunda’ Raj that dooms over the nation, curbing the free will and killing the ever illusioned citizen. Our dear President, Dr. Abdul Kalam, has a 2020 dream, to this effect he quotes – “Dream, Dream, Dream; Dreams result in action; And actions turn in reality”. It’s time we add another line to the quote – “We have to ‘make’ the dreams result in action”.
Because if India and Indians need to realize the 2020 dream, we truly need to be independent of the ever hungry – in every sense – politicians। And then we would have the freedom to make India, what “Bharat” literally means.

I would give you a line to ponder over – Independence is Interdependence; Freedom is Absolute”.
